BUZZARDS BAY COALITION and the WAREHAM LAND TRUST

Mary McFadden’s family has summered in Wareham, Massachusetts for many decades, and the Stifler children are the fifth generation to form a lasting bond with this upper Cape Cod community. As a family, the Stiflers share a love for the seaside’s natural wonders and a desire to conserve and protect the environment and ensure clean air and water.

The Buzzards Bay Coalition and the Wareham Land Trust promote conservation, advocacy and community education along the Massachusetts coast near Cape Cod. Both organizations’ mission is to conserve and advocate for open space, natural resources and environmental protection, while offering additional community resources and activities. Pressures to develop land are threatening remaining open spaces, but the percentage of permanently protected open space in Wareham has tripled since the establishment of the Wareham Land Trust, founded by a group of concerned citizens led by Mary and Larry in 2001.

It’s been a labor of love being part of these organizations that have had an outsized impact on Wareham’s conservation over the past 20 years.

Opening Nature to All

Over time, the Stifler Family Foundation has increased its commitment to local and regional conservation efforts, including the work of the Buzzards Bay Coalition, which offers youth activities such as swimming lessons and shoreline exploration. A surprisingly high percentage of children who grow up in seaside communities have never stepped foot in a boat or swum in the ocean. Many young people in the region lack the opportunity to enjoy these experiences.

Committed to changing this imbalance and to bolstering local conservation efforts, in 2021, Wareham celebrated the completion of the Onset Bay Center, a multi-use building for education and community activities, named in honor of the McFadden family. The OBC welcomes all children and their families to learn how to swim, sail, fish and learn about coastal ecology. Our hope is that many more local residents will have access to all that the seashore offers, while building memories and protecting its ecological values for future generations.
